AI voice-clone scams reach Ireland families
In 2024, fraud rings in Ireland began cloning voices from social media videos: a "relative" calls in panic, or a "fund manager" confirms an investment by phone. The voice is real; the person is not.
How the clone call works
Scammers harvest audio from public videos, clone a voice with consumer tools, and call a relative with a crisis: an accident, an arrest, a frozen account. Payment is demanded urgently, often in crypto to avoid bank controls.
In investment variants, the cloned voice belongs to a "senior broker" confirming a deal. Victims in Ireland transferred through SEPA Instant and revolut-style app transfers after calls that sounded exactly like the person they had emailed for months.
Verification beats suspicion
Family safe-words and call-backs to known numbers defeat most of these attacks. So does a shared rule: no emergency payment is ever made on a first call, whatever the story.
Irish victims should file a Garda crime reference number early — banks and the FSMA-style ombudsman route typically ask for it before opening a reimbursement case.
If the transfer already happened
Call your bank immediately to attempt recall, report to An Garda Síochána within hours, and preserve the call records and wallet addresses. Crypto legs are traceable to exchange cash-out points.
Where the bank failed its own duties, the claim through the Banking and Payments Federation Ireland dispute process can include the bank's handling of the payment — not just the scammer's conduct.
Frequently asked questions
How much audio does a voice clone need?
Seconds. Public social media videos provide more than enough for consumer cloning tools.
Can banks refuse to help because I 'authorised' the payment?
Authorisation obtained by impersonation fraud is not valid consent. Document the deception and pursue the claim through the Banking and Payments Federation Ireland dispute process.
